Organizational learning and internationalization knowledge: a comparative study of family firms and non-family firms
In Managerial Cognition and Strategic Management. Rethinking internationalization strategies, Nova Publishers, 2011.
This contribution seeks to explain the internationalization degree of family firms in a knowledge-based view. Through an empirical study of a French sample of family and non-family firms, variables dealing with organizational learning and knowledge development are used within an explanatory model. The nature of organizational learning, the practices of knowledge management i.e knowledge sharing and knowledge tacitness interact with internationalization knowledge to determine the firm's internationalization degree. Specifically, we hypothesize that internationalization knowledge is positively influenced by double loop learning and negatively influenced by internationalization strategy emergence. The nature of organizational knowledge i.e. tacitness and sharing also influence internationalization knowledge. Finally, firm’s internationalization knowledge is hypothesized to influence firm’s internationalization degree. A comparative analysis between family firms and nonfamily firms is carried out.
